AI Deepfake Scams

Scammers can use AI deepfakes to disguise themselves as anyone. Even your investment advisor.

Before you commit, confirm the investment is legitimate and the person you’re dealing with is real and not some freaky AI triplicate.

AI Romance Scams

Fraudsters use AI to create fake dating profiles, then ask you to invest in things like crypto or a “unicorn startup.” But it’s not a unicorn. It’s a scam.

And the person on the other end of it is not as hot as you think.

AI Voice Scams

AI can be used to clone the voices of investment advisors, politicians, and even loved ones to gain your trust, then scam you.

So, if you get a call from your grandma pressuring you to invest, hang up. Or if that’s normal grandma behaviour in your family, just talk to her in person.

AI Crypto Investment Schemes

Ever see someone promoting a crypto investment scheme online as their “secret to getting rich?” Well, that someone might be AI-generated, and that scheme might be a scam.

Before you invest, do your research. And make sure you’re getting crypto, not crapto.

Signs of an AI investment scam

  • Videos of people with unusual body or lip movements.
  • Strange or inconsistent language in online content.
  • Celebrities or public figures promoting investments they might not normally be associated with.
  • Unwillingness to meet in person.
  • Unexpected calls or messages, especially if they convey a sense of urgency, fear or panic.
  • Fake websites that mimic real companies.

How to protect yourself

Research

Do your research before investing. Look for warnings from securities regulators, and negative reviews. Remember – positive reviews can be faked.

Use the National Registration Search to make sure the company or person you’re dealing with is legitimate and registered to buy and sell investments.

Confirm

Double check that a company’s phone number matches the one listed on the registry. Give it a call to make sure.

Confirm someone is who they say they are. Meeting them in person is one way to dothis, but be safe. Check their address to make sure it’s a real office – not a dark alley.

Report

AI isn’t the only tool scammers use to defraud investors. Report suspicious activity to the BC Securities Commission.
